What sort of site to build?

I’m sitting here playing with Drupal. Drupal is pretty cool. Mature, relatively easy to use, and has lots of useful add-in modules available. It’s not perfect, but it’s good.

The problem is, I’m not really sure exactly what I want this site to do.

Blogging is an obvious goal. Not because I have any particular urge to blog — half the reason I’m writing this entry is just to test out some configuration changes I recently made — but because for a personal website, it just makes sense. But past that, what else? Since I’m putting the time into building a website, it’d be nice if it had something to set it apart from the million other blogs out there that nobody reads.

One thing that comes to mind is tutorials — I enjoy explaining technical things and could probably write some interesting tutorials on various tech topics. I tried this out once before, though, while evaluating Drupal, and had some trouble getting the “book” and “taxonomy” modules to work together in quite the way I wanted. I don’t remember exactly what the problem was, but I think it had something to do with getting the list of tutorials in a given category to display itself in a certain way. If that’s the case, I think there are some modules available that’ll help, so I’ll press onward.

I’m at a loss for other concrete ideas. But I guess that’s OK for now, because it’s not like I have a deadline to meet, and Drupal is fun just to experimient with.
